When Govan’s Brigade reaches the end of the Union line it clashes with the opposing pickets.  Major U. M. Laurance of the 107^th Illinois, in front of Colonel John R. Bond’s 2^nd Brigade describes a lively skirmish during the early morning hours.

          Major General Stanley’s 1^st Division moves up and relieves Wood’s 3^rd Division on the front line, allowing Wood’s men to pull back and regroup for the assault.
