Wood and Johnson’s divisions form for the assault. The exact location of the assembly area is unknown. The participants only described it as a large field beyond and behind the Twenty-Third Corps. In addition, the highly compressed two-division column would not have taken up as much space as shown on the map. Map icons simply take up too much space for the sake of legibility.
The two divisions form ready to fight. Wood’s division forms in column. Each regiment is in line of battle. Each brigade has two lines of regiments, and the brigades are stacked one behind the other. Brigadier General William B. Hazen’s 2nd Brigade leads the division, followed by Colonel William H. Gibson’s 1st Brigade and Colonel Frederick Knefler’s 3rd Brigade.
General Johnson describes his division’s deployment as having Brigadier General John H. King’s 2nd Brigade directly behind Knefler’s, and Colonel Benjamin Scribner’s 3rd Brigade to the left of King. Brigadier General William P. Carlin’s 1st Brigade follows in support. |
