By 9 AM not much has changed for either army.  Brannan’s 3^rd Division is fighting Forrest’s cavalry and Walker’s Reserve Corps division.  Baird’s 1^st Division is about to march up in support.  Major General Crittenden has dispatched Grose’s brigade to open contact with Thomas, but otherwise, no Union units are nearby.

            Fortunately for the Union, Bragg is caught completely off-guard by the presence of Federal units so far to the north.  Instead of attacking immediately, he hesitates, and begins the process of sending units north to face the immediate threat.
