Polk, Wood, and Jackson settle into a firefight with Berry and Dodge in the dark woods.  Smith’s brigade advances and stumbles upon Dodge’s brigade in the darkness.  Much of the 77^th Pennsylvania and 79^th Illinois are captured, but Brigadier General Smith is killed in the confusion.  Col. Alfred Vaughn Jr. of the 13^th & 154^th Tennessee assumes command of the Confederate brigade.
