As Baird moves forward, Scribner attempt so wheel to the right to attack what he hope is the open right flank of the Confederates, and Starkweather wheels to the left to avoid the regiments of Baldwin’s brigade. The two meet in the darkness and begin firing upon each other, each thinking the other is the enemy. Polk’s brigade arrives, fires into both of them, and Baird’s division breaks and flees to the rear.
Wood’s brigade is initially stalled in Winfrey Field. Cleburne calls up the artillery battalion, and they blast the woods at close range. A charge then sends Baldwin’s front regiments reeling. Col. Baldwin is killed, and brigade command turns over to Col. William Berry of the 5th Kentucky. Jackson’s brigade advances into the gap between Wood and Deshler and attacks Willich. The fiece attack pushes back Willich two front regiments.
Deshler continues to advance to far to the left. Cheatham’s division is ordered to the attack. They believe they are merely supporting Cleburne, but as Jackson can attest, they quickly find themselves on the front line due to Deshler’s ineptitude. |
