Fearful for the safety of his isolated brigades, General Granger orders the units to withdraw.  McCook rides to Thomas, whose Fourteenth Corps headquarters is at Kelly Field to the rear, to appeal the decision, but Thomas declines.  As he is returning, events begin to unfold at Jay’s Mill.  A detail sent to Jay’s Mill under Lt. Faulkner of the 86^th Illinois to fill canteens is surprised and attacked by scouts from the 1^st Georgia Cavalry.  A brisk firefight ensues.  When McCook returns, he immediately sends Mitchells’ Brigade on its way.
