Having decided at 2 AM to burn Reed’s Bridge and trap any Confederate units present on the west side of Chickamauga Creek, Colonel McCook sends the 69th Ohio to burn the bridge. They scatter the few Confederate pickets there at first light, remove the beams, set fire to the structure, and return to the Union lines. McCook intends to attack at dawn and crush what he believes to be an isolated Confederate brigade.
Davidson’s brigade, having been sent scouting north from Alexander’s Bridge, camps for the night several hundred yards south. |
