Viniard Field
Sept 19th

At the Viniard farm to the south, the brigade of mounted infantry commanded by Colonel John Wilder holds a defensive position, screening army headquarters located just to the northwest at the Widow Glenn house.  A little after 1 PM Rosecrans orders the Twentieth Corps division of Brigadier General Jefferson Davis to advance into the woods and secure the right flank of Van Cleve.  Unfortunately, Davis marches too far to the south, leaving a significant gap between him and Van Cleve to the north.  In addition, he allows his 3rd Brigade under Colonel Hans Heg to advance alone while Brigadier General William Carlin’s brigade is still deploying.  While Davis is undoubtedly an aggressive general, a rare characteristic in the Army of the Cumberland, a piecemeal advance such as this squanders any advantage the aggressiveness might have obtained.
