Cheatham’s Confederate division collides with Palmer and Johnson’s Union divisions. Johnson runs into Jackson’s brigade on a low ridge north of the Brock farmstead. With his brigades in a two-forward and two in reserve formation he only has four regiments on the front line, just enough to match Jackson’s brigade frontage.
The brigades of Brigadier Generals Charles Cruft and William Hazen win the race to the Brock family field, forcing Brigadier General Preston Smith’s brigade to charge across it to dislodge them.
Colonel William Grose’s brigade halts on a low knoll south of the Brotherton Road. When the Confederate brigade commanded by Brigadier General Marcus Wright tries to outflank Cruft they run headlong into Grose’s position. |
