Hearing the fight in the woods east of Kelly Field grow louder and louder, General Thomas commits his 1st Division under General Baird to the fight. Deploying in Kelly Field, they advance through the woods toward the fighting. Colonel Grose’s brigade of the Twenty-First Corps deploys and advances to their right, but it soon withdraws under orders. Colonel Scribner continues to think Grose is guarding his right flank, which will have disastrous consequences later in the morning.
When they arrive on the scene, Scribner attacks and drives Wilson away. Howell deploys one section to cover the withdraw of the brigade, but loses one gun in the fight. King’s Regular Brigade passes through Croxton, helps drive off Wilson, and adds pressure to Ector’s brigade. Ector retires from the unequal fight, having lost more than 50% of his brigade. |
