Van Derveer’s brigade and Ector’s brigade engage in a short, sharp firefight that inflicts severe casualties on Ector, but relatively few on the Federals.  Connell’s two remaining regiments arrive and deploy alongside Van Derveer.

            To the south, Croxton wins the race and deploys in line of battle in time to counter Wilson’s advance.  A fierce fight ensues.  Wilson’s attack is so aggressive that the Federals think they are being attacked by a far larger force than they actually are.

            Like Battery C, 1^st Ohio, Howell’s battery is unable to find a suitable firing position and remains behind Wilson.
