Confederate Order of Battle
The Campaign
September 20th

Late at night on the 19th General Bragg reorganized his entire army.  He divided the Army of Tennessee into two wings, a Right Wing and a Left Wing.  He placed Lieutenant General Polk in command of the Right, and the newly arrived Lieutenant General Longstreet in command of the Left.

The Right Wing consisted of Cheatham’s division of Polk’s corps (separated from Hindman’s division during the first day’s fight), Hill’s Corps, and the Reserve Corps.  The final brigade of Walker’s division arrived from Mississippi during the night, and its commander States Rights Gist, assumed command of the division leaving Walker’s sole responsibility the command the corps.

The Left Wing contained Hindman’s division of Polk’s Corps, Buckner’s Corps, Hood’s Corps, and the reserve artillery.  Hood’s Corps was brought up to three divisions with the addition of Major General Lafayette McLaw’s division from Longstreet’s corps.  McLaw did not arrive in time to participate in the battle, so command of the division fell to Brigadier General Joseph Kershaw.  Kershaw kept operational command of his own brigade, as well as that of the division.  However, it is clear that Kershaw didn’t coordinate or issue many orders to the other brigade of the division, and the two failed to coordinate at key points.
