In an attempt to retake the initiative in the north, Bragg has ordered Cleburne’s division to march from the south and attack.  By 6 o’clock, with the sun setting, he has deployed behind Liddell and Cheatham, with the divisional artillery concentrated behind Wood in the center.  Once the advance starts, Deshler’s brigade immediately breaks contact with the rest of the division and begins veering to the left.

            Baird’s division arrives and has finished deploying behind Johnson.
