The Confederate attack stalls in the ditch.  A portion of the 18^th Indiana Battery moves to an enfilading position and begins throwing canister into the packed ranks of Benning’s brigade.  Wilder’s Spencer repeating rifles and the firepower of three batteries prevent any advance into the West Viniard Field.

            Bradley’s brigade finishes deploying behind Wilder and attacks.  Incredibly, portions of Carlin’s brigade and two regiments of Buell’s brigade join the advance.  The pressure is too much for Law’s division, and they begin to retreat.
