Davis’ division and Buell’s brigade break and retreat in confusion.  The 8^th Indiana battery is abandoned.  However, the 81^st Indiana remains in the East Viniard Field, protected by local ravines and the terrain.  They fire into the flank of Robertson’s brigade and harass the Confederates as best they can.

            Col. Hans Heg is mortally wounded while attempting to rally his brigade in the ditch.  Command falls to Col. John Martin of the 8^th Kansas.
