Harker’s brigade, after brushing aside the retreating 25th Arkansas and 39th North Carolina, charges north up the Lafayette Road into the flank of Gregg and McNair’s brigades. The attack clears the road and sends the two Confederate brigades back into the woods.
Hood releases Benning’s brigade, who moves forward to assist Robertson. Trigg, pushing forward to help Robertson, moves to the right and takes up a supporting position.
Robertson continues to attack. The brigade pushes the Federals out of the ditch, and the retreating mob flees across West Viniard Field to the safety of the woods beyond.
The firepower of Wilder’s brigade prevents Robertson from advancing any further, and they retire slightly back into East Viniard Field.
Barnes’s brigade takes up a defensive position at the southwest corner of East Viniard Field, and uses his artillery to command that portion of the field. |
