The 25th Arkansas and 39th North Carolina of McNair’s brigade march into the field past the Brock House, but are stopped and forced to retreat by the firepower of the 18th Indiana Battery, and the two regiments of Wilder’s brigade. Afterwards, the 98th Illinois and 17th Indiana quickly rush to their former positions.
Harker’s brigade is ordered to wheel north and clear the Confederate units from the Lafayette Road.
Robertson’s brigade pushes Davis’ division out of East Viniard Field and into a ditch along the edge of West Viniard Field. Buell’s frontline regiments are routed in the confusion. The batteries still in East Viniard Field retreat to avoid capture. However, the 81st Indiana of Carlin’s brigade retires in good order.
