In the woods east of the Viniard Field, Heg’s brigade runs headlong into the main Confederate line and Brigadier General Bushrod Johnson’s division, where a heavy firefight ensues.  Carlin’s brigade begins its advance, but stops halfway through the field under orders from division commander Davis.

            To the south, the 2nd Minnesota battery shells the skirmishers of the 1st Florida Cavalry (dismounted) posted on the edge of the field, forcing them to retreat.
